After reading this, you’ll be able to girlsplain Coachella’s rise (or fall) to basic. (~read time: 6 min)
Coachella 2024 is right around the corner and this year’s lineup is anything but hype (unless you’re a hipster from brooklyn, then this one’s for you!!). So let’s commemorate Coachella pasts by getting into:

The Basification of Coachella
The Theme of Coachella 2023 was NOT TRYING 🌴
Maybe I’m biased (because that’s the year I went) but I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… nothing can top Coachella 2022. That was the PEAK and the END of Coachella’s festival reign.
This last year there’s been a rise of normcore and quiet luxury.
And now we’re seeing it play out with major celebrities and influencers at Coachella. It’s like they’re trying to prove a point of “I don’t need to try that hard, I’ve earned my place as a Coachella it girl”.
It’s like as soon as Kim and Kylie became billionaires, the Kardashians took a page out of Succession’s quiet luxury handbook. They used to be covered head to toe in logos.

The Girlies are Tired of Girlying 🤠
Coachella 2023 was a competition of who can be the comfiest / most basic. It was all about who could stand out the least and yet still stand out.
The vibe was giving “I’m just here for the music”.
So, we might not be seeing boho chic or extravagant hair and makeup anymore.
To put things in perspective: Vanessa Hudgens THE QUEEN of Coachella wasn’t even in attendance.
this was prob my fav look
I have to say, as much as I loved watching what everyone would wear year after year, I personally love this basic vibe.
Maybe everyone’s just learning from their mistakes because a hat, good shoes, and a fanny pack are necessary to survive the desert heat.
Or they’re just copying me because I embraced normcore in 2022.
From Boho to Boring
The Evolution in Photos 🌞
The girlies who are known for their Coachella fashion in the past have nothing to prove anymore. They don’t need fits to get attention, they’ve already earned it. Let’s compare:
